In the world of SEO and SEM, there is quite a bit for people to know. There is keyword density, internal links, landing pages, crawlers, local search results, SERPs, and other terms. If you’re new and not accustomed to internet marketing, some of the terminology can get confusing. To help you in understanding some of the key terms in the world of SEO and SEM, we put together a glossary of terms that you need to know.
A few weeks ago, Google modified their search algorithms in an update being dubbed, the “Pigeon Update” by Search Engine Land. This change has a serious affect on any local SEO efforts your business may be doing as Google makes a larger effort to give its users a better experience when searching locally.
What Does Google Hummingbird Mean for My Business?
01/10/2014
In August of 2013, Google started using a new search algorithm called “Hummingbird.” When this change was announced a month later, it spun the marketing world on its head and forced the industry to rethink how it approaches SEO. Google Hummingbird favors “conversational search,” which can decipher the context of your search rather than just pick out keywords on which to base its results.
Social Media Optimization & SEO: A Cowley Success Story
12/11/2013
Call it insomnia, a crazy passion for internet marketing and/or blogging, and/or all of the above but I am officially staying up all night to get work done and decided to open up the magic “Blog Ideas” list I have for Cowley and am going to try to take down all 27 on the list before the sun comes up. Don’t worry; I’m not doing any illegal drugs, just massive amounts of coffee. I’m gonna sleep great tomorrow night.
[Author’s note: I got about 7 of the 27 topics done that night.]
Seemingly, since the beginning of time, Google has allowed geeks like me to see some really cool stuff on Google Analytics.
Imagine you could tell what keywords people used to find you on Google? For instance, we are #1 for “Syracuse ad agency” and I always like to see when we get traffic from that. It means something is going well and we are the #1 answer to that question: “Can you help me find the best ad agency in Syracuse, NY?” (Google’s answer: “Cowleyweb.com!”)
Both professionals and non-professionals agree: SEO (search engine optimization) is an extremely frustrating game to play! It requires constant work, meticulous strategizing, ongoing effort, and a myriad of tactics. However, if you “win,” you win big.
The fact that you are reading this implicitly means you know the answer to this question. I have successfully gotten you to read my blog. That is, in short, why you should do it too.
You may still ask why, however, so I’ve put together a short list of points on why blogging is so great for your business.
Don’t get me wrong, I would have clicked on this in a heartbeat when I first started my internet marketing gig. Google Analytics was always the elusive, mysterious, powerful tiger back then: something I knew was awesome but never could get a hold of. All I saw was a lot of information I really didn’t know what to do with.
How did I overcome that? Two ways. First, I read blog posts just like this one; and second, I spent hours upon hours in front of the computer screen figuring it out for myself and applying what I learned from the blogs.
I recently received the honor of being invited to speak about “Blogging and Social Media” – with emphasis on the SEO factor – as part of an upcoming public panel. Resolving to be natural, yet prepared, I decided the best way to prep for the event was to blog about it. (Ironic, right?)
