Without Adversity You Have No Perspective

It always seems to be right around this time of the year that we’re talking about the weather getting warmer. Temperatures in the 50’s, sun shining…then bam! Mother Nature hits us with a cold, windy 30-degree day that makes us turn the heat on again. The cold gets thrown at us just when we thought things were looking up. But, we’re from Syracuse so we should have expected this, right?

You would think living here almost all of my life that I’d begin to expect that a snow flurry could break out at almost any time. Yet, here I sit writing this with my space heater on because it’s freakin’ cold out! I’m sure I’m not the only one who didn’t expect this kind of weather to come back around. If you think about it, though, the same goes for our businesses: sometimes we don’t expect something to come out of nowhere.

We tend to get complacent sometimes and just exist. Like the weather, though, there are things that come out of nowhere and go, bam! Hits you right in the face and leaves you wondering how you’re going to solve the problem that’s been presented. Over the 41 years of being in business, I know I’ve had my fair share of those moments, and I’m sure you have too!

But, even after all of these years I welcome the adversity. I too fall victim to just existing sometimes, but when there’s a problem I snap into action to solve it. Adversity keeps me on my toes and in my experience, only good things come out out of it. Without adversity, I wouldn’t have any perspective and never be challenged.

It’s true what they say, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” The kind of problems we face as a business can only make us stronger. They cause us to adapt and therefore make us more ready to take on the next challenge. So, the next time you’re facing adversity, take it head on and come out stronger. You’ll always be glad you did!
